My Pitch Bats are under appreciated. And let’s face it, they have gotten a bad rap for being gross but it’s important to understand their importance. The humble bat lives in colonies, tens of them in their own spots. One bat in a single night will eat half its weight in insects, including mosquitos and ticks. I think we can we all agree that mosquitoes and ticks are annoying. Unfortunately for our local ecosystems, bat habitat has been severely reduced. With the expanding of communities, roads, and the grand opening of that new chic fila, bats natural homes are being destroyed. So. What can we do about it?. With the use of reclaimed lumber, some elbow grease, and plenty of research, there is so much that can be done. In my fellow’s project I aim to build bat houses to help give back to our local forests. By working with bat specialists at the Department of Natural Resources, a significant impact can be made to provide new habitat. These bat houses will also provide data on the bats in our backyards. Over the course of the year, figures on how they are doing will give this project the field science backbone needed to know what’s being done correctly, and inevitably incorrectly. Along with giving this data to this field of science to help future bat initiatives. The humble bat will not be snuffed out, their decreasing populations are not set in stone and this project can be a step to supporting our own outside
